ANIMATED NEON TWIRL

Instructions

  1. Open up a New Composition in Adobe After Effects. Give a name (ex. Neon Twirl) and set duration to your choosing.
  2. Double click in the project panel to import your color palette. From here, locate on your computer the color palette you wish to use. (You can find many of these on the web for free of charge.)
  3. Drag color palette into timeline. Adjust size as needed by selecting the layer, click “s” for scale, and adjust scale.
  4. Using the Ellipse tool, hold down Shift to create an even circle. Change its fill to a color on your color palette and then search for “Drop Shadow” in Effects and Presets. Apply Drop Shadow to your first circle.
  5. In the Drop Shadow properties use an Opacity = 80%, Distance = 150, and use the same color as you did for your circle.
  6. Duplicate the shape layer (select layer, then click “Ctrl+D”), and then adjust the shape’s position, scale, drop shadow color and distance. Repeat this process until all colors in your color palette have been used.
  7. Delete the color palette from your composition. Select all shape layers, then precompose into a single composition by clicking “Ctrl+Shift+C”). Name this layer “Shapes” or whatever you wish.
  8. From the Effects and Presets menu, add Turbulent Displace. Change the “Amount” to “25” and the “Complexity” to “2”.
  9. Next, add Directional Blur. Set the value somewhere between 400 - 600.
  10. Add Twirl, and adjust angle to “180” and Radius to “90”.
  11. Add a Solid Color Background by clicking Ctrl + Y. Change fill settings to a color of your choosing.
  12. Open a New Viewer by going to “View” in the top menu, then click “New Viewer”. Open  Shapes composition in one of the views to allow for more control over the final design.
  13. Duplicate Shapes layers until layers have filled up the composition.
  14. Precompose all shapes layers so we can animate our background design. Name the composition “Twirl”.
  15. Open the position settings by selecting the Twirl composition and clicking “p” on your keyboard. Create a keyframe at the very first frame, then click “end” on your keyboard to go to the very last frame. Move the composition to the left by adjusting the “x” position values.
  16. Add “CC Repetile” to the “Twirl” composition. Increase the Expand Right Values to fill the composition and open Tiling drop-down menu and select Unfold.
  17. Duplicate Composition. In “Toggle Switches/Modes” go to “Modes”. In the duplicated composition (should be the layer at the very top) change its mode to “Linear Light” and set an Opacity (press “t” to open Opacity settings) to 25%.
